Shirlene is a Fishery Officer (Markets) with the Fisheries and Aquaculture Division (NFIMT) of the FAO in Rome. She works on fisheries and aquaculture market analysis across NFIMT and other FAO divisions and serves as coordinator of the GLOBEFISH project within NFIMT. In this role, she oversees the GLOBEFISH Highlights, the European Price Report, and the Chinese Price Report, and coordinates the publication of market information and analysis on the GLOBEFISH website.
She brings more than 25 years of experience in monitoring and analysing the global fisheries sector, with a focus on markets and trade. Her career includes consultancy work for private companies and national agencies, as well as extensive experience in producing publications, delivering training, and facilitating trade promotion activities. She has also coordinated national and international workshops and conferences. She is a frequent speaker at international events and has authored numerous articles and reports on fisheries markets and marketing, with a particular emphasis on promoting opportunities for small-scale enterprises. She enjoys observing the changing rhythms of global consumption and trade and is drawn to the flow of consumption trends shaping markets around the world.
Prior to joining FAO, she served as Director of INFOFISH from December 2018 to September 2023, having previously held the position of Interim Director from May 2016. Before that, she worked as Trade Promotion Officer at INFOFISH for sixteen years. Shirlene holds a Master’s degree in Food Biochemistry and a Bachelor’s degree in Biochemistry and Microbiology from Universiti Putra Malaysia.
